The Seven Clans of Manipur
Explore the ancient Meitei clan system known as Yek Salai. Each Salai holds a rich history and a unique lineage of Yumnaks (family names). Our mission is to help you discover and connect with this vital part of Meitei heritage.
What is Yek Salai?
The term "Yek Salai" refers to the seven major clans of the Meitei people in Manipur. According to the ancient scripture Wakoklon Heelel Thilel Salai Amailon Pukok Puya, these clans originated from a single ancestor and branched out over time.
Each Salai is associated with a specific deity, a direction, and a set of customs. The system was fundamental to Meitei society, governing everything from marriage alliances to social hierarchy. Understanding the Salai system is key to understanding Meitei history and identity.
Did You Know?
The seven Salais are traditionally forbidden from inter-marrying, as they are considered descendants of a single patriarchal line.
Each Salai has a principal deity, known as an "Apokpa," which is worshipped by all its members.
The Sanamahi creation myth describes how the universe and the clans were formed, providing a cosmological basis for the Yek Salai system.
